welcome to the panama

i saw this guy running this radio station from a special booth at the fair. i was trying to capture panamanian radio at its finest, with all the interruptions and sound effects like squealing tires, maniacal laughter and car horns, but the guy saw me and started to talk to me on air. he says: welcome to the panama. you like the panama? it is the best country in the world, eh?

brujas

we recently had some kids draw us a picture of the witch(es). they also threw in some pictures of duendes (elves or gnomes, pronounced "DWEN-days"). the witches (brujas, pronounced "BREW-has") are real people (one of the drawings has the names of the witches). covering themselves with ash, they fly around to different peoples' homes and make mischief (tangling up your hair in your sleep, and "messing with you"). the witches can also turn into birds.
also, the kids said they found a duende's hat one time and they put it in their grandmother's house and then one day when they wanted to look at it it was gone. they said it was made of metal. the duendes are little white people with beards that live down by the river and will take children. they don't talk, but make a "ch-ch-ch-ch" noise.

panamanian bin laden

this guy has "the panamanian bin laden" on his windshield.
i think it has to do with him having a big beard.
he's a regular fixture around penonomé.

panama music video

this is a panamanian music video from a band here. all this is in the city. we use those buses to get around, that guy is offering cellphone calls on the street, there's a guy selling green coconut water, weedeater guys, the kids that sell all kinds of stuff in the streets, a lottery ticket lady, a fish man, a meat man, some guys putting up a mcdonalds sign, a barber shop, and i've never seen that sombrero guy before. they all where that little hat at the end because the leader of the band wears that hat.
